I didn’t recognize it. He’s a good guy. A father. And his mannerisms and things are not Crowley/bad guy-esque. This is so bizarre.

This is part of why this episode disturbed me so much. Because it’s almost fifty years later and this isn’t part of the Captain Kirk character that makes it into the remakes. Because there’s nothing alien at all to me about Charlie’s anger, how he lashes out with horrific consequenses at the women around him who don’t immediately return his affections and dare to enjoy the company of other men (and with the exception of the man he disappears in the gym all his victims that we see are women).

Almost fifty years, and all I can think about when I watch this is how this one scene from this one episode of a low-budget space show with women in revealing costumes and its own share of problematic shit is more up front and no-nonsense about telling teenage boys and the men they grow up to be that your feelings do not trump the feelings of women than the overwhelming majority of the rest of our popular culture today.

At the end of the second episode of Elementary, Watson touches on the fact that Holmes not letting himself do certain things or have things that make him happy because it’s like a punishment. She used the word ‘penance.’

And personally I really loved that.

Because Holmes is ‘gifted.’ He’s been that way his whole life. And when you’re gifted, you’re expected to be perfect. You’re expected to never get into trouble and never make any mistakes and never do anything that’s not socially acceptable. Especially when you’re in school. “Kids will be kids” does not apply to you, so while your classmates are doing drugs or getting into fights or making bad grades or dressing in a way that is looked down on, you can’t even think about getting away with any of that.

You are supposed to be perfect.

And when you’re not, people are mad at you, or disappointed in you. Other students get spoken to if their grades are below a D, while you’re expected to make nothing but perfect As.

And that follows you through your childhood and most of the rest of your life. It hits hard and then sinks in until your own expectations of yourself are above and beyond everyone elses to the point where you feel the need to punish yourself for making tiny little mistakes or doing anything that isn’t accepted by ‘respectable, high class’ people.

There have been several adaptions of Sherlock Holmes, and while they all show how odd he is and brilliant he is and how much of a chore it is to deal with him, they never really touch on WHY he does the things he does, why he is the way he is- the ugly side of things.

And that is why I love Elementary so much. Holmes is not put on a pedestal. He is not portrayed as an all knowing genius who gets away with nearly everything because his brilliance makes all his flaws worth overlooking, which implies that he also overlooks his own flaws.

Elementary doesn’t neglect the ugly parts of being gifted. It doesn’t romanticize it like most shows and most of society does.

It’s like a breath of fresh, crisp air, and I love it.
